Hosted on the Alpha Training Grounds at Life Time Fitness, the Alpha Competition put regional winners through grueling test of functional fitness

CHANHASSEN, Minn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Top competitors from around the country demonstrated their athleticism, strength and overall functional fitness in the third annual National Alpha Showdown competition presented by Life Time – The Healthy Way of Life Company. The final Regional Alpha Champions from 14 regions across the country participated in the competition that took place at the newly constructed Alpha Training Grounds at Life Time Fitness Chanhassen on Saturday, Oct. 11 but ultimately only two earned the title of the 2014 Alpha Male and Alpha Female.

David Freeman from Scottsdale, Ariz. and Kelli Holm from Bloomington, Minn. took home the coveted title. Freeman and Holm completed events including a run on an all terrain endurance course, an Olympic weight lifting clean ladder, an outdoor obstacle course including eight obstacles such as rope climb, monkey bars, balance beam and pull ups, as well as a sled relay including two 60-yard sled pushes, kettle swings and plyo-box jumps. As Alpha Male and Alpha Female, Freeman and Holm each received a prize package valued at approximately $5,000 including a trip for two provided by Organic Valley, a Spri gift certificate, a Blentec blender, a Renola product package from General Mills, Blue Buds X product from Jaybird, and bragging rights as two of the fittest men and women in the country.

Second and third place male and female athletes were also honored with Sam Areias from Austin, Tex. taking second in the male competition, followed by Cory Svihla from Chanhassen, Minn. in third. Kim Hageman from Denver, Colo. came in second in the female competition and Katie Hanger from Fairfax, Va. placed third. Second and third place winners received a Spri gift certificate and a Renola product package from General Mills.

The Alpha Showdown pushes competitors mentally and physically, while creating a comprehensive performance challenge that allows them to see how they rank among the fittest people in the country. All events at the national competition were scored based on a collective assessment of four different events with the athletes who performed most consistently throughout the events landing higher on the final leader board.

Launched in 2010, Alpha Showdown competitions take place locally in Life Time destinations nationwide followed by regional competitions, and culminating with the national competition. Throughout the year, Life Time hosts Alpha Training to help people become healthier and improve functional fitness through the program that focuses on functional movements that are properly progressed using varying intensities. Alpha Showdown events are designed to track progress year over year and offer a competitive platform to test the fittest men and women in the country. The Alpha Training Grounds is a one-of-a-kind, newly constructed space featuring a unique obstacle course including cargo net, monkey bars, ropes, balance beam and more which allows athletes to train and compete for functional fitness competitions.
